[Course] [Masterclass] David Carson Teaches Graphic Design

David Carson, editorial design by Karen Hilton on Behance

Course on MasterClass, 2h 7 min.

If everybod likes your work it's probably not great, you need some people not liking your creations. Graphic design is mostly very clean, proportional, and it gets boring. Graphic design needs it's rebels, that ask why can't this be this other way? Do art things to get your message across, not just for recogntion or financial retribution. Use YOUR intuition, YOUR experience and skills are unique. Make people start noticing again, make them curious to come closer, read the fine print. Make things your own, have some ownership, do things no one else will do but you. Don't "snap to guidelines", don't let the computer do the decisions for you. We want your mind, not your software. If it's too balanced, it's possibly forgetable? Templates/ fitting images into predefined boxes can kill the impact of good photos. Don't go for the obvious. Read the article, listen to the music, get inspired! Don't be afraid of the unexpected. Use the unexpected in your favor.

Assignement 1: using only letters from your first name and black and white, tell who you are.

Assignment 2: how's your life right now? use color, shapes, texture but no written message.

Make a recognizable logo, a logo so cool that people want it on their t-shirt, website and maybe even their car. What is important to you? Work / where you live. If it's work, go where the work is, if it's where you live, go where you like. Get seen, get on social media, participate in discussions, enter competitions.

Assignment 3: How do you see yourself in 10 years? use color, shapes, texture, type/ written messages. No restrictions.
